Music Lounge

There are several songs that made me appreciate music played on Scandal. Here are my top 3 picks from Season 1.

The Album Leaf, The Light

The song has quickly become Olivia & Fitz’s theme music.

Johnnie Taylor, “I Believe In You (You Believe In Me)” [LISTEN]

When Fitz comes to Olivia’s apartment this beautiful gem is played softly in the background. “Hi…Hi.

"Tied Knots" by The Album Leaf [LISTEN]

Gladiators wondering what song played during Olivia and Fitz’s phone chat from the White Hat’s Off episode. It’s called “Tied Knots” by The Album Leaf.

Elizaveta - Meant is the song played during the new #Scandal promo for tonight’s #Oscars telecast. [LISTEN]

If silence can heal, I know it can kill/ I still think that we were meant to be/ I will always remember you watching me walking away (Meant by Elizaveta)

When your lover is the President, every inch of you is a #Scandal.

Scandal Music in “Boom Goes the Dynamite”  - Betty LaVette’s soulful  ”I’m Not The One.” [LISTEN]

This is the song played during Olivia and Fitz’s “One Minute” look at the Caldwell fundraising gala.

Fitz finishes his speech. Olivia gets a call from someone. Olivia flirts with them on the phone; Fitz sees Olivia happy. (Scandal Music Lounge)

When’s the last time music played a key role in the unspoken words Olitz convey? #ClosetGate (Quick FYI: This isn’t the first time a Betty LaVette song played during a telling Olitz moment. Remember “We Can’t Always Get What We Want”? The Betty LaVette song played during that moment was “Crazy” and oh boy wasn’t #WhoShotFitz crazy?!)

Defiance Music: Bettye LaVette - “Crazy”
[LISTEN]

Edison picks up Olivia. Cyrus leaves a message for James to join him at Fitz’ birthday gala. Two characters share a moment while en route to the gala.

What a perfect song for Defiance’s crazy cliffhanger, isn’t it?

Stevie Wonder’s I Don’t Know Why [LISTEN]

Stevie Wonder’s I Don’t Know Why is the song played during Olivia and Fitz’s Closet moment. (It’s the FIRST time Olivia & Fitz done the deed since Olivia left the White House. All of that time apart  - 2 years + 10 months - plus the hurt & pain behind Defiance factors into what we all saw happen!)

The lyrics especially the chorus definitely translates to Olivia and Fitz at the moment they first see each other at baby Ella’s baptism ceremony. No wonder the Closet moment happened! I’ll let Stevie break it down to you with his soulful song lyrics…

I don’t know why I love you

I don’t know why I love you

I don’t know why I love you

But I love you

Always treat me like a fool

Kick me when I’m down that’s your rule

I don’t know why I love you

But I love you

Oh you never stop your

Cheatin ways with another guy

You laugh in my face

Lord how long must I be disgraced

Cause I love you

Oh baby, baby, baby

I don’t know why I love you

I don’t know

You and me baby, oh

I don’t know why I love you baby

But I love you baby

Oh darlin, darlin, darlin

You throw my heart down in the dirt

You made me crawl on

This cold black earth, baby

No I never, I never knew

How much love could hurt

Until I loved you baby

Till I loved you baby, baby

Oh baby, I can’t stop

I can’t stop crying can’t you see

Here I’m pleadin on my knees

I’m on my knees

Won’t you help me, help me please

Cause I love you, I love you baby

Sure enough, baby, yeah

I don’t know, you don’t know

We don’t know none of us

Can’t do nothing about it

I don’t know, I don’t know

Oh baby, I don’t know, I don’t know

Nobody can do nothing about it

So even though Fitz said to Olivia that they are done, he still loves her and she likewise. (They will never be done!)

Back in December, Scandal’s Music Supervisor Alexandra Patsavas talked about selecting music for the show.

Choosing the music varies from scene to scene. Shonda has a great deal of these songs in mind. Sometimes they’re written into the script. Sometimes she takes a look at footage and decides what’s going to go in there. Our composer, Chad Fischer, does a good deal of the heavy-lifting on this show and has created a beautiful score. Always the toughest scenes are the ones where songs are used as the score… to tie together a group of moments and perhaps need to say more than one thing and move along with the action. Those can be difficult.

When Shonda doesn’t have a particular song in mind, I send options until we find one that works. Sometimes the very first option works, and sometimes there’s a good deal of digging.

Bottom line: Stevie’s “I Don’t Know Why” perfectly suits not only this intense Olivia & Fitz scene but Olitz point blank period.

Seven Fifty Two Music

Johnny Nash - “I Can See Clearly Now”

Flashback -Someone tells Huck she’s pregnant. Huck tortures someone while in a good mood. Huck removes the watches off of all of his victims.

Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s classic tune, “You’re all I need to get By” played on “A Woman Scorned” during Olitz’ 21 minute interlude at Olivia’s apartment.

You’re all I need to get by

Like sweet morning dew, I took one look at you

And it was plain to see you were my destiny

With arms open wide I threw away my pride

I’ll sacrifice for you, dedicate my life to you

I will go where you lead, always there in time of need

And when I lose my will you’ll be there to push me up the hill

There’s no, no looking back for us

We got love sure enough, that’s enough

You’re all, you’re all I need to get by

You’re all I need to get by

Like an eagle protects his nest, for you I’ll do my best

Stand by you like a tree and dare anybody to try and move me

Darling in you I found strength where I was torn down

Don’t know what’s in store but together we can open any door

Just to do what’s good for you and inspire you a little higher

I know you can make a man out of a soul that didn’t have a goal

‘Cause we, we got the right foundation and with love and determination

You’re all, you’re all I want to strive for and do a little more

You’re all, all the joys under the sun wrapped up into one

You’re all, you’re all I need, you’re all I need, you’re all I need to get by

Oh babe, oh babe, honey, honey, honey

Yeah, I need you darlin’, oh I need, oh baby

I’m better than that, all I could need, I need tonight

Oh, oh your love

Loved this one lyric: Don’t know what’s in store but together we can open any door. (Oh so true for Olitz!)

A Woman Scorned Music…

Harrison is concerned that there are too many people in the office. Quinn asks Huck if book-club is a super spy code. Abby boards the book-club members.

Marvin Gaye: Got To Give It Up, Part 1.

Back Stabbers by The O’Jays

Song was played during the last moments of “We Do Not Touch The First Ladies”, episode 312.

What they do

(They smile in your face)
All the time they want to take your place
The back stabbers (back stabbers)

Ben, the two of us need look no more
We both found what we were looking for
With a friend to call my own
I’ll never be alone
And you my friend will see
You’ve got a friend in me
(You’ve got a friend in me)

Ben, you’re always running here and there
(Here and there)
You feel you’re not wanted anywhere
(Anywhere)
If you ever look behind
And don’t like what you find
There’s something you should know
You’ve got a place to go
(You’ve got a place to go)

I used to say “I” and “me”
Now it’s “us”, now it’s “we”
I used to say “I” and “me”
Now it’s “us”, now it’s “we”

Ben, most people would turn you away
I don’t listen to a word they say
They don’t see you as I do
I wish they would try to
I’m sure they’d think again
If they had a friend like Ben
(A friend)
Like Ben

Nina Simone, Wild is the Wind”

Song that played during the funeral scene at Arlington Cemetery in 3.04 (Say Hello To My Little Friend) with Fitz.

Love me, love me, love me, love me, say you do

Let me fly away with you

For my love is like the wind

And wild is the wind, wild is the wind

Give me more than one caress

Satisfy this hungriness

Let the wind blow through your heart

For wild is the wind, wild is the wind

You touch me, I hear the sound of mandolins

You kiss me, with your kiss my life begins

You’re spring to me, all things to me

Don’t you know, you’re life itself?

Like the leaf clings to the tree

Oh, my darling, cling to me

For we’re like creatures of the wind

Wild is the wind, wild is the wind

You touch me, I hear the sound of mandolins

You kiss me, with your kiss my life begins

You’re spring to me, all things to me

Don’t you know, you’re life itself?

Like the leaf clings to the tree

Oh, my darling, cling to me

For we’re like creatures of the wind

And wild is the wind, wild is the wind

Wild is the wind, wild is the wind

Wild is the wind
