Sarah: What can you tell me about Huck & Quinn on Scandal!? Last episode’s torture scenes were so crazy.
Right!? Rough times for Huckleberry Quinn. The two will come face to face after that whole sexual/scary torture scene … but will it be toothless kisses and hugs? “You’re going to see a little scene between them and it’s pretty intense,” Guillermo Diaz says.
"Yeah, get ready for that," Katie Lowes adds. “What do you possibly say to someone whose tooth you just ripped out?” Very good question, Katie.
TV Fanatic got the chance to chat with Katie Lowes and Guillermo Diaz from Scandal! Find out what they had to say about the fate of Huckleberry Quinn now!
They might not be Olitz steaming up the Oval Office, but Huckleberry Quinn is certainly in the running for Scandal’s most awesome platonic pair.
What was it like to film that torture scene in Quinn’s apartment? What will Huck and Quinn’s relationship look like moving forward? And what will be revealed on Scandal Season 3 Episode 10?
TV Fanatic got the chance to sit down with Katie Lowes and Guillermo Diaz to find out the answers to these questions and more! Read on to find out what Huckleberry Quinn had to say about ABC’s Scandal.
TV Fanatic: What has it been like to play this odd couple made up of two people who seem to be so different on the surface but who, because they both walked away from lives, have so much more in common than people realize?
Guillermo Diaz: It’s a dream come true to get to play these characters. For actors, it’s so rare that you get such amazingly written material. For Shonda Rhimes, she’s the best in my eyes, so I feel just so fortunate and so lucky and it just makes me want to work harder and harder with each episode. Because you want to be as good as the script, for me at least, I go “okay, I’ve got to be as good as this freaking ridiculously good script” so it just makes me work harder and it pushes me more. It’s amazing.
TVF: What’s it been like to evolve Quinn from her sort of timid beginnings to this character she is now?
Katie Lowes: It has been amazing. Shonda Rhimes and the Scandal writers are freaking geniuses, and I feel blessed. You know, a lot of people book a job on a TV show and their character stays the same, you know, for years and years and years and Quinn has gone through so much growth and evolution and change and she’s had so many thing happen to her and I’ve gotten to do repeatedly so many things that I’ve never done before and I feel like she’s such a three-dimensional and interesting character and I just feel lucky.
TVF: What can you guys tease about “A Door Marked Exit”?
GD: You’re going to see Quinn and Huck interact after the whole torture thing happened and that scene is going to be really intense. You’re going to find out a lot more about what the blinking light on Huck’s computer screen means. That’s all going to be revealed.
KL: And you’re also going to get more into the Maya Pope thing and why Olivia Pope in her phone call said “He’s not the monster. She is.”
TVF: What was it like filming that torture scene given how close everyone is off the set?
KL: It was crazy. We shot all the torture scenes in one day, on Halloween, and it was a bunch of hours, a 14.5 hour day, and a mixture of many emotions. It was intense, challenging, and also exhilarating and exciting because I think Guillermo and I we both feel so lucky as actors to get material like this—
KL: and the opportunity to do such hard and challenging things as an actor is not always what you get to do as your job and it’s so awesome. We trust each other implicitly and it was just really wonderful to have Guillermo throughout that day. That day was probably the hardest of my professional life. I’ve never been asked to do that kind of work, just be naked and taped up for like 14.5 hours on a floor and screaming and trying to save my voice and have it seem real and just live in a state of fear for that long. It was really scary but it was so, so worth it.
TVF: Guillermo, anything you want to add?
GD: Everything Katie said! It was a very strange day. It was very odd shooting these scenes. We have so much love for each other outside of the show and for us to be in these situations but we feel really comfortable with each other so when Huck is up close to her face with my hand touching her face, it felt really free as an actor to work with somebody that you feel really comfortable with and I think that made the scenes even more believable and more real. So yeah, it was fun. I’ve never felt so excited shooting a scene before on Scandal.
I’m disappointed in you, Quinn. You’ve been a bad girl.
[Warning: This story contains spoilers from Thursday’s “YOLO” episode of ABC’s Scandal.] Will “Huckelberry Quinn” ever be the same again? During “YOLO” — the penultimate Scandal episode of 2013 — Quinn (Katie Lowes) learned first-hand what it means to be on Huck’s (Guillermo Diaz) bad side.
Calling all Gladiators: Scandal is back! Forget the glasses, just pop a straw into your favorite bottle of vino because tonight is the beginning of the epic two-episode midseason finale and it’s about to get all kids of crazy for one particular OPA team member. When we last saw Quinn (Katie Lowes), our darling double agent, she walked into her apartment to find Huck (Guillermo Diaz), a tarp and his trusty toolbox ready to ask her about her B613. And by ask, we mean torture the crap outta her!
To get you pumped up for tonight’s sure-to-be mind-blowing episode of Scandal, we just got off the phone with Katie Lowes and she promised us that this is one hour of television that you most certainly cannot miss. From Quinn’s dabble in the dark side to the highly anticipated (and extremely awkward!) lick to the face, read on for all the exclusive (and scandalous!) details…
What can you tease about tonight’s all new episode “YOLO”?
Katie Lowes: Well, Quinn has got gotten herself in a real pickle, but I mean come on, she hasn’t done anything! I’m sure you’ve seen the promo for tonight, which shows Huck’s nice and long lick onto Quinn’s face. All I can say is that nothing is as it seems and what’s great about this show is that everything you think is going to happen is not what happens. So I’m just so excited to read my Twitter feed tonight, I just can’t even tell you.
What was it like filming that particular scene with Guillermo Diaz and how many licks did you have to endure?
[Laughs] How many licks does it take to get to the center of Quinn Perkins, you mean? A lot. You know, what’s amazing is that Guillermo and I are actually incredibly close friends in real life, but it was still pretty crazy and intense especially when we’re talking about when he licks her face. We kind of really had to leave our friendship at the door in order to go to the places that we go in tonight’s episode. But in between takes of that licking thing Guillermo was just constantly asking, “Are you OK? Are you OK? You’re good? OK, good.”
We’ve seen what Quinn is like from the outside of torturous saran wrap, but what is she like underneath?
It’s really scary because as we’ve seen a lot in this series, Quinn has had a lot of really bad things happen to her. She’s been to jail, she has lost many a boyfriend, she’s ripped scissors out of a guy she was dating’s neck, so she’s definitely not a stranger to the drama of it all. But I would have to say that Huck is family to her and Olivia Pope is family to her and she is nothing without them and it starts to come into play tonight that there is conflict between Huckleberry Quinn that may or may not be able to ever be resolved. That may be the worst place in Quinn’s heart and mind that she could possibly be.
Do you feel like Quinn is going to be forever changed after this episode? Will there be any long-term repercussions?
Yes. Yes, she’s definitely forever changed. All I can tell you is that when I got this script I didn’t sleep for three and a half weeks. I’ve never been so challenged and pushed to limits that I’ve never been pushed to before as an actress.
With Olivia’s mother returning to her life, what does this mean for the Gladiators?
Well, I think it means a whole hell of a lot. We deal with conflict and we deal with scandals all the time. We’ve dealt with scandals with Olivia’s personal life and we’ve kind of become an old hat at that, but to be dealing with her family is a whole other level. It’s a new piece of the onion that we are peeling back as to who Olivia Pope is, her history, what her backstory is, and it brings her relationship with Oliva Pope and Associates and all the people who work there to a whole new level because we have to see this vulnerable side of Olivia.
Where does tonight’s episode rank on the scale of Scandal's most shocking episode?
Literally yesterday when I watched it I was shaking and I could barely sleep last night. I think if it’s a one to ten scale, this is definitely the ten. Tonight and next week’s episodes are a two-part winter finale. You’ll see that for the past eight episodes we have been laying down the track of the train and tonight’s episode is where the train completely goes off the tracks.
Scandal airs tonight at 10 p.m. on ABC.
