While shooting ABC’s “Scandal,” Guillermo Diaz often finds himself in a “dark place” when playing the former government interrogator and assassin, Huck.
Guillermo Diaz chats #Scandal with Gold Derby.
Guillermo Diaz talks about his family jawdropper on ‘Scandal’ and playing a torturer.
In a recent episode of the ABC hit drama “Scandal,” Huck recalled the family he had before he was brainwashed by the government. Was this a forgotten past or just a figment of the character’s imagination. The man who plays Huck, Guillermo Diaz, admits, “I played it as if he did [have a family].”
In a video chat with GoldDerby, he revealed that he did not find out about Huck’s past until he received the script: “It’s television. You don’t find out stuff til you are doing that episode” but “it kind of brings a spontaneity to it and an organic feel to it… Now I’m kind of starting to enjoy that I don’t know everything about my character… It kind of makes it more exciting to play.” On the impact this revelation will have on the future in of the show he says, “It definitely will kind of colour my performance for the other episodes.”
As to whether Huck will ever be reunited with his family, Diaz speculates, “I would love to see that, I honestly don’t know, but I can’t see how Shonda [Rhimes] wouldn’t bring back… his wife and his son. It would make for a really really great episode… So I’m hoping for it.”
Huck’s skills as an interrogator means that Diaz also has to embrace the darkness in his performance. “You see Huck torturing people in that episode [‘752’] but he’s enjoying it… In the present you have seen Huck torture but he is in despair about it and he doesn’t want to be that person anymore. It’s almost torture for him to have to torture someone.”
Diaz says that the show’s casting director described Huck’s presence as “really loud and really quiet at the same time.” In the show’s ensemble Huck “brings realness to the show… there’s always something going on in the back of his head… all the other characters are really talky and flashy… and Huck is just that real, quiet, focused and intense presence.”

Gorgeous Kerry Washington shares her beauty and fitness tips, plus news about her new film “Peeples”
Kerry Washington is political when you ask her about beauty.
“Oh honey, I have a small village of people who come to my hotel room on the morning of a big event,” she tells me. “It’s spackle and chainsaw time! I think they use drills.
“These pros create something out of the mass that just rolled out of bed!” says the star of the new romantic drama “Peeples” and TV’s hit “Scandal.”
OK, now we like Kerry even more because she’s stunningand humble.
Her best beauty tip is a great one for midlers who have a big event coming up like a wedding.
”Honestly, find a great hair and makeup person for your big event,” says Kerry.
KERRY WASHINGTON BEAUTY AND FITNESS TIPS
“I’m lucky that I’m lent beautiful clothing by talented designers. They make me look good,” Kerry tells me, calling from the “Scandal” set on a wickedly crazy weekday morning.
Me: Westill need your beauty secrets.
“As for the rest of it, I just try to take good care of myself by eating clean food and exercising as best as I can.
“I’m not one of those girls who works out every single day. I do think rest days are important. The body needs time to recover,” she advises.
She is a big fan of one exercise.
“I am a big Pilates girl because I love it. There is no better exercise to really get to know your body, plus it really changes your body. I started doing it when I was doing a play on Broadway. All of us were having back pains. Someone said, ‘You should try Pilates to get through the play.’
“It changed my relationship to my core and corrected my posture and the way I think about my movement.”
WASHINGTON ON HER SERIES “SCANDAL” AND NEW MOVIE “PEEPLES”
In her new movie “Peeples,” Washington plays a woman who is challenged in love.
“It’s really fun to break up my dramatic work with a comedy. I couldn’t keep a straight face and we did so much playing on the set. It was a joyous time in my life. “They had to lock the piano up, so we would stop singing. There’s even a big finale dance number with choreography,” she says.
She did the film because “it was a really great story about meeting the family and knowing it might not go so great. There are a lot of secrets in this family, so believe me when I say that nobody is perfect.”
As for her TV series, “Scandal” is a huge hit.
Washington plays a crisis management expert, which intrigued her from the start.
“I never heard of that world before which is good because the goal of a crisis management expert is to stay hidden and behind the scenes.
“When I first got the role and knew it was based on a real person and inspired by Judy Smith, I went online. There’s lots you can find out about Judy,” she says. “Here is a woman who is connected to some of the most famous and infamous scandals of our time. She is for real.”
And there is one major perk.
“It’s fun now because if I was ever in a crisis I could get Judy Smith on the line. I have the number that will actually reach her. I can get the real deal on the phone!
“But the moral of the story here is be good. You never want a scandal in your life!”
I definitely want to see the big finale dance that they do on the set of Scandal. (I’m keeping my fingers crossed for it to appear on the DVD!)
