Scandal Season Three Countdown. Mellie Grant.
“I need to make some plans for my political future. And I do have a bright, bright political future. A sweet lawyer who gave up her career for her husband, suffered a miscarriage and then had a late in life baby while First lady. That’s gold. That’s a future president. That’s a hell of a second act. America loves a second act. Get. Over. Her. You see her again and I’ll blow you away and I’m an excellent shot remember.”
So bingeing on Scandal now officially counts as keeping up with current affairs, right?

Love this Olitz parallel!

Scandal Connection – Fitz’s hurt face over seeing photos of Olivia with Edison Echoes Olivia Seeing Fitz & Mellie Dancing at the Inauguration Ball.
Hunting Season x Happy Birthday, Mr. President
Olivia and Fitz say plenty with NO words actually being said when they are together and especially when they are apart.
These two scenes from episode 203 and episode 208 mirror one another that it’s easier to just let it all be said by their facial expressions.
Look at Olivia’s face at seeing Fitz dancing with Mellie on his huge day! #Angst
Look at Fitz’s face over seeing Olivia reunited with her ex husband-to-be Senator Edison Davis. #Hurt

Scandal Connection: Just the Two of Us echoes I Just Don’t Wanna Go.
Fitz faking being happy with Mellie convinced her to cancel her initial double date dinner arrangement plans with Kip (the Commerce Secretary) and his wife. Mellie I believe wanted to spend some alone quality time with Fitz just based on his ‘happy’ performance. Mellie thought all was well between them.
Fitz faking being happy with Mellie echoes a line he feed Olivia in season 1 about him and Mellie: “I think you underestimate how good a politician I am.” I think Mellie forgot how good Fitz is at faking it with her too.
Prior to this scene Fitz actually seem interested in America’s Baby when Mellie was busy folding the baby clothes. So factor in the fact that Fitz was beyond gone because Olivia declared that it was OVER between them via #TreeGate and factor in the fact that Fitz was on hard liquor, Fitz was certainly not about that giving a damn life anymore.
Mellie to Fitz: I just thought it’d be nice to have it be just the two of us for once.
This line delivered by the amazing Bellamy Young echoed what occurred in the limo before he got shot on their way to his 50th birthday celebration in front of the whole world. I still believe that Mellie decided that Fitz was right about not wanting a big party. (Unfortunately Mellie picked the WORSE time to switch on the caring wife act. I mean Mellie couldn’t have known that #WhoShotFitz was about to go down, right? She was acting on her gut instinct! But I digress!)
The huge birthday celebration with Steve Wonder scheduled to serenade Fitz and Mellie should have never happened. I absolutely think that dinner scene mirrored what Mellie said in the limo.
Mellie to Fitz in the limo: What if we just - ? I don’t know. Skip this whole thing and went home. I feel fine. I just don’t want to go. I’m sick of smiling. I’m sick of acting like we’re happy. I just don’t want to go.
As you can see Mellie is sick of acting happy and smiling too.
I’ll even say this dinner scene especially “Just The Two of Us” echoes what Fitz told Olivia in episode 208: We’re in this together.
Don’t you see the clear distinction between Mellie & Fitz with Olivia and Fitz?
Cold Fitz was on full display during that dinner scene with Mellie in Hunting Season. Cold Fitz wasn’t there when he took Olivia to see the Constitution. In fact we saw a different side of Fitz. #ItsAOlitzThing
I also could connect this birthday limo ride scene with the fact that Fitz was at the same point in his relationship with Olivia. Olivia had “move on” (side-eye) with Edison Davis. “Let me give you a fun fact. She’s not my mistress anymore. So buck up. You won.” Olivia went from being the love of his life to being his mistress a label Fitz believe she is not but much more than that.
In fact Fitz cemented my theory when he repeated Mellie’s words back to her: We can’t always get what we want, can we?

Cyrus Beene to Fitz in Hunting Season.
Just another brilliant quote from Cyrus Rutherford Beene being incredibly great. Don’t you look forward to his dialogues particularly to Fitz?! This echoes this scene from episode 4 Enemy of the State in season 1:
Dialogue transcript under the cut via cantifly:
“It’s almost like Liv knew he was watching her and she was trying not to look into his eyes.” (youtube comment)
First scene reminded me of the second. Crazy to think she may still feel his gaze and think to avert her attention elsewhere when they aren’t even face-to-face.
Completely agree with this Olivia and Fitz connection. These two seriously are in sync. I caught that too watching the TV scene. It’s like Olivia could sense he’s watching her. Gotta love the writers at Scandal. There’s SO many scenes that connects with one another, isn’t there?
Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn, Scandal
Would the married president of the United States really risk everything for his illicit lover? He might if she looked like Kerry Washington – and together, these two are steamy enough to elevate D.C.’s temperature by several degrees. Who else could make an endless scene of shoe-tying seem somehow sexy?
