"I’m not crying. I’m trying not to scream. I’m…scared." I was stunned by this scene between “Olivia” and “Jake” in season 3, episode 4 of Scandal, ”Say Hello To My Little Friend.” It is rare to see a Black woman be allowed to express fear on screen and fear in regards to something as complex as who her father “Rowan/Eli Pope” really is and what he is capable of. If a Black woman is even cast on a show, her fear is usually acute and “fight or flight” that’s related to immediate threat and she’s usually portrayed as a victim or aggressor with little else. The long term fear over complex issues and the pain that accompanies it rarely surfaces on television.

"Olivia’s" fear isn’t solely about how emotionally abusive her father is directly to her, which she subversively admitted when she said "my father wouldn’t hurt me…not physically." That’s an admission via omission of his other abuse. But that he controls “Huck” and plans coverups and coups that escapes literally everyone’s power or imagination is the source of her fear. An abusive parent she can handle though it hurts; she did so in episode 1 when she got off of that plane that he ordered her on, though there were times in episode 2 where upon flashbacks of the past she showed fear of his authoritarianism and finding out who he truly is. But handling the fact that her father is Command and has turned “Huck” back into a killing machine, and destroyed her engagement with “Edison” in the past, and tortured “Jake” for both sport and purpose and literally can and will do whatever he wants is enough to make her not want to even think about who he truly is. 

And “Jake” knows this so well as he said:

Your father, he would slit your throat and drink your blood if it served the Republic. And I think you know that, I think you have nightmares about that, so why are you pretending like you’re daddy’s little girl?”

I was stunned. Hello floor, meet jaw. We spend so much time thinking that “Olivia’s” baggage is all because of “Fitz.” But it’s becoming clear that her father has placed much deeper scars than “Fitz,” “Jake” or “Edison” ever could. For “Olivia,” at the level of deception and utter patriarchal terror that her father is operating at, brilliantly no less, only ignoring who he is and “playing family” seems to be a reasonable suggestion based on her fear, and that came through loud and clear when she said this to “Jake”:

Whatever’s going on, I don’t want to be a part of it. I don’t want to know. I don’t want to see. I don’t want to help. I need to go back to doing what worked. Eyes straight ahead. No looking around corners. No peeping in shadows. No asking questions. No stepping outside the lines. I need to be a good girl. Go to Sunday dinners. I’ve never heard of B613. I’ve never heard of you.

"Oliva" was vulnerable. She let "Jake" comfort her. She conveyed humanly fear of a man she is terrified of but still cares about; this is the albatross of the adult child of an abusive parent. She seemed devastated at the idea that "Huck" could have killed her father, yet perhaps his death could eradicate a lot of her fears and problems though not her pain. So is "Olivia" just another Strong Black Woman stereotype? Not at all. Nothing about her reads as one-dimensional to me—not controlling images to me. Not being a controlling image or a flat “positive” character in reaction to controlling images, but a human character, does not then mean said human has to be a “role model” or that all of her actions are ones to emulate. That’s never the point. Adult women can embrace a complicated character with interest and nuanced critique; we don’t need “role models” and don’t watch television for that reason.

A couple of days ago, I saw a humorous GIF that played on the film trope of the White character who MUST see what’s going on, even if they get killed doing it. The odd sound upstairs. Must investigate. The weird noise in the woods. Must investigate. However, this was applied to “Olivia Pope” and season 3, episode 3, “Mrs. Smith Goes To Washington.” The captions read: "Hmm…White people running." "My Black senses are tingling." "Fuck it, I’m ‘Olivia Pope’ and I ain’t scared of nothing." I did laugh at this. “Olivia” does get into some intense situations that the average person would be deathly afraid of and piss their pants. But “Olivia Pope” is not the average person. Her life is not average. Her job is not even remotely average. And as I alluded to in a previous essay, The Serious Politics of Scandal, she and her team have faced complicated situations that everyday people cannot imagine, and that is among the things that generate a deep interest in the show and creates a powerful fandom. 

Now, yes, us Black folks know good and well if we see people running, we will have on our Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce and Usain Bolt cleats so fast and be out of there. “Olivia” walked towards the danger—and even walked slowly as if she knew something was wrong—not away from it. She did what like…firemen do. Because the rest of us would’ve been down Capitol Hill so fast…

While “Olivia” has the standard external markers of the (class privileged, corporate) Strong Black Woman stereotype, such as power suits and great style, her own company, powerful meetings, a loyal staff and problem solving skills, she easily eschews this stereotype and presents a full human being with nuanced emotions with situations where she is confident and others where she is vulnerable. And a lot in between. Humor (i.e. smirking and laughing phone calls with “Fitz”), empathy (i.e. that beautiful tender moment with “Huck” that felt like siblings connecting over shared pain; her father as “Rowan/Eli Pope” the abusive patriarch and “Huck’s” B613 father Command, the embodiment of the State and patriarchy itself), sensuality and sexuality (i.e. her tender moments with “Jake” that are a tempered and cool tense flame; her intense moments with “Fitz” that are erratic and passionate but an explosive flame). 

Overall, “Olivia” is not portrayed as not being afraid of anything. I don’t see the stereotypical Strong Black Woman overall; she’s regularly vulnerable and has a lot of variant emotions. And she does fear things, mostly losing her sense of political morality (i.e. the white hat) amidst a moral relativism that every character has on the show. She does fear some people. She clearly fears her own father even as she stands up to him at times and reclaims her power. And expresses humanly fear (though at times suppressed via words but conveyed via emotions) regularly. And in episode 4, she is clearly terrified of her father, the more she learns about him. Who wouldn’t be? Although her own career involves moral relativism, it’s a butterfly flapping in the wind compared to her father’s tyrannosaurus rex. Even “Cyrus” and “Hollis” don’t operate at the level that “Rowan/Eli Pope” does. 

There are plenty of times when “Olivia” conveys fear. When she thinks “Huck” is gonna kill or is in pain. When she was in the parking lot and “Artie Hornbacher” with the presumed Thorngate file was in her car. She was as scared as any woman would be in that situation. Her power is critical thinking (under duress) and talking her way through so she talked “Artie” out of her car as her defense mechanisms of choice are sublimation (over-working, swimming, the wine) and intellectualization (talking her way through fear and problems). When she found out “Jake” was surveilling her and even got a head injury trying to run away before she really knew all of the details, that was fear. When she tried to get the “dictator’s” wife out of the country and only at the end with support of her team did she confront him on that, that was overcoming fear. But most of all, her longitudinal fear that love for “Fitz” will never pay off (as it won’t pay off for “Mellie” either) and her alluding to this several times throughout all of the episodes (i.e. to the Civil Rights minister’s mistress, to the political candidate running for office who had a long affair with his brother’s wife, to the female CEO who cheated on her husband with a Supreme Court Justice nominee) reveals a fear that is rarely expressed on screen for Black women. Not one where it’s simply that we aren’t “deserving” of love—that’s the usual stereotype, but that love itself may not be enough. That other complications exist, and not ones that solely exist to make Black women “immoral” while everyone else maintains their “morality.”

One of the reasons that “Olivia Pope” presents a uniquely nuanced and powerful portrait of a Black woman on screen is because this character gets to experience fear but is not forced to keep it inside all of the time. There’s no relentless Strong Black Woman. She’s also not completely helpless where “damsel in distress” becomes an approved identity for Black women solely because it’s the opposite of how we are usually viewed. That identity is a facet of the construction of White womanhood, meant to be denied to Black women through the Strong Black Woman stereotype where the latter has actual consequences. Instead, “Olivia” acknowledged her fear, one that tears would not even articulate (and not because Black women can’t cry; there’s been several instances of “Olivia” crying on the show) but because even tears are not sufficient. Are tears sufficient for you if Command was your father? It’s like…the fear and pain is past that. And she was comforted by Jake, as a vulnerable human being, not someone he had to save with zero agency. This nuance is new on screen but something that many Black women wish they could convey without being forced into a binary of Strong Black Woman versus"oh you’re ‘weak’ and acting like a White woman" whenever we aren’t performing strength. Simply complex humanity. And “Olivia” being able to be afraid but retain her humanity and all that it encompasses is revolutionary.

Scandal Sets Design Revealed for the Blue Room (S. Marie Bailey)

The Blue Room…and a bit of rambling ‘bout Arlington

Oh….Lordy be.  This room tried to kill us all.  This room and Arlington National Cemetery (in a golf course).  You have no idea.  BUT…like I say time and time again, there is no time for cry babies at this pace and we made it through this one too.  I bring up the cemetery scene because I just have to say it one more time for the record - Bokelberg’s directing and the camera work in that cemetery…wow.  Speechless.  Those shots of the soldiers, the folding of the flag, the slow mo salutes and the bugler on the hillside…. sigh.  I just watched the scene again.  And I teared up AGAIN.  Somehow I’m transported out of a tv show and right there next to that widow into the scene.  Just tremendous.  


So.  Now The Blue Room is an actual space in The White House.  It’s Oval shaped just like The Oval Office and is used for receiving guests, receptions and sometimes dinners.  The team researched it at great lengths when it popped up in a script last season actually.  It ended up not being used back then…but here it is now.  A transformation of a space. 
And we brought in all the blue that makes it The Blue Room.  Blue and gold upholstered furniture, blue and gold drapery and of course lots of dead president art.  I mean…lovely stately art pieces all certain to be amazing enough to have been chosen from The White House Art Collection.  (More about the art in episodes to come.) 
After all of the fuss and dust settled, we ended up with this.Ladies and gentlemen I give you The Grant Administrations Blue Room.  This is the space where we saw all those adorable children and reporters and Mellie’s speech went off without a hitch…until she rambled on in the hall nearly giving poor Cy another heart attack.

Jake couldn’t have just popped out of the hole and all of a sudden wants to bring down B613, right? What’s driving him? Is it only this need to be with Olivia? His time in the hole? What has he lost that would make him want to take this course, or is it only about what he could gain?

What price is Rowan going to collect from Jake? Olivia didn’t believe that Jake was let out solely because she put Sunday dinner back on the table and neither do I. Was it the combination of Sunday dinner and Fitz confessing to the non-affair?

Am I asking too many fucking questions that will not ever get answered?
