Let’s go around the circle, actor by actor, to see who played who on what show.
Columbus Short is OPA’s Harrison Wright, but before that he was on Studio 60 as Darius Hawthorne, the stand-up comic hired as a writer by Matt Albie and Simon Stiles after they see him in a club.
Matt Letscher played the scheming Billy Chambers, ex-chief of staff to the VP on Scandal. He had two minor roles elsewhere: On The West Wing, he’s the U.S. attorney trying to get Toby to explain the leak about the military space shuttle toward the end of the series, and on The Good Wife, he was one of Peter’s old friends whom Eli disliked.
Lisa Edelstein’s only been on Scandal a little bit, as a woman who had an affair with a Supreme Court nominee. On Sports Night, she was Bobbie Bernstein, college basketball expert and Dan’s forgotten onetime lover. On West Wing, she was “Sam’s prostitute friend” (as Donna calls her), and on The Good Wife, she was Celeste, one of Will’s exes. (Yes, she has played Josh Charles’s former flame twice.)
Mark Harelik played Fitz’s press secretary Marvin Colgate on the first season finale of Scandal. He’s also done one-episode roles on Grey’s, Gilmore Girls, andThe Good Wife.
Keiko Agena played Britta, who took over for Marvin as press secretary. (And then she got shot. R.I.P. Britta.) Agena is most famous for her role as Lane Kim, Rory’s rock-obsessed BFF on Gilmore Girls, but she also did a one-off role on the first season of Private Practice as a nun.
Katie Lowes plays the sparsely eyebrow-ed Quinn, the newest staffer at OPA. Before that, she had onetime gigs on PP and Grey’s.
Brenda Strong played Governor Reston’s wife, whom the governor caught inflagrante with their contractor. (He thought she was being raped, and he killed the contractor. Whoops!) Strong’s on one episode in season two of Gilmore Girls, and she’s Sally on Sports Night, the colleague who sleeps with both Dana’s shithead fiancé and Casey. She’s also the beloved dead mom on Everwood, seen only in flashbacks.
George Newbern plays Charlie, one of Huck’s assassin colleagues. You can spot him in one episode each of Grey’s and Private Practice.
Liza Weil was central to the first season of Scandal as Amanda Tanner, the White House intern whom Cyrus paid to have killed. Perhaps she drew on her previous White House experience from The West Wing, where she was a low-level staffer whom Leo decided not to fire, even though she leaked important information about him. Or maybe she drew on her Gilmore Girls background as the uptight, brilliant Paris Gellar.
Kurt Fuller played the wrongly implicated Grayden Osborne, disgraced director of the CIA on Scandal. He spent a few episodes in the SitRoom on West Wing, did one-offs on Grey’s and Studio 60, and recurs as a judge on Good Wife.
Gregg Henry plays evil douchebag Hollis Doyle on Scandal. He also played less-evil-but-still-a-douchebag Mitchum Huntzberger, Logan’s father, onGilmore Girls, and played a doctor on one episode of Grey’s Anatomy.
Debra Mooney played Supreme Court Justice Verna Thornton, whom the president smothered to death earlier this season. (She was dying anyway, but still.) Mooney played Owen’s mom on two episodes of Grey’s and did one episode of Private Practice, but to us she’ll always be the awesome no-nonsense Edna Harper from Everwood.
Tom Amandes plays Governor Reston, the politician who killed the guy his wife was having an affair with. He’s been on one Grey’s and one Private Practice, but we’re most fond of his role on Everwood, as Debra Mooney’s son, the fastidious Dr. Abbott.
Jeff Perry is Cyrus Beene, political evil mastermind and chief of staff to President Grant. He plays the far-less-powerful Thatcher Grey, Meredith’s formerly estranged father on Grey’s Anatomy, and he played a scheming whistleblower on a season-four episode of The West Wing. It’s not part of the chart, but he also played Mr. Katimski on My So-Called Life. The guy has range!
Darby Stanchfield plays the hyperdevoted Abby, a domestic-violence victim who believes she owes her life to Olivia Pope. Stanchfield did one episode ofPrivate Practice AS WHAT? (She’s more recognizable as Helen Bishop, Glen’s mother on Mad Men, but that’s not on the chart.)
Josh Malina plays the cereal-loving David Rosen, whose legal career fell apart after a woman was murdered in his bed. (He didn’t do it! But he didn’t call the police — he called Olivia.) Malina is on one episode each of Grey’s and PP, and he starred in both Sports Night and The West Wing. Oh how we wish he got to be funny more often on Scandal. Free David Rosen!
Bellamy Young plays the First Lady Macbeth on Scandal. She played the same character on two episodes of Grey’s and Private Practice, and she played an angry southern lawyer on one episode of the fifth season of The West Wing.
Kate Burton plays the scary, power-hungry vice-president on Scandal. She also played Meredith’s scary mom on Grey’s Anatomy, a senator in one episode of The West Wing, and has appeared as opposing counsel on a few episodes ofThe Good Wife.
Scott Foley is the mysterious military guy who seduces and spies on Olivia. Previously, he was the sad, sad Henry on Grey’s, who of course tragically died, because that’s how love works on that show. It’s sort of how love works onScandal too.

Gladiators didn’t you all enjoyed the fact that Joe Morton is now a guest star on Scandal? He’s a GREAT actor. Seriously how can you NOT love THE Joe Morton?
I wonder what his role will be in relation to Olivia Pope particularly. (Shout-out to Gladiator Scottie for sparking this discussion!)
All we know is that he’s working with Jake Ballard who killed Osbourne - the fake Mole. I wonder who is the actual mole.
Also could this mole be the SAME person who got their hands on Thorngate? Remember how Artie hopped in a car way back when? Am I reaching here? I trust Shonda and Scandal writers to keep us on the edge of their seats when all is revealed!

I must have missed his name during the opening credits, but I was shocked out of my mind when I saw him! Love, love, love this guy as an actor! I swear, Scandal is pulling all kinds of people to the show.
I wonder if he’s connected to Olivia and/or Harrison! (Yeah, yeah. I know. Just because he’s black doesn’t mean he has to be connected, but still). That’s an interesting question re: Thorngate. That never was resolved, was it? His appearance at the last few minutes of the episode just raised all kinds of questions.
Who is he? Is he the mole? Is he working for the mole? Is the “mole” really a collection of people? What is Jake’s true role here? Is he just the clean-up guy or is his position in all of this bigger than that? Is this new guy connected at all to Fitz as Jake is via the Navy? Could what happened in Iran be tied to this Albatross? Exciting stuff!
Spectaclesinscript, I LOVE the idea that the mole is a committee. I can definitely see something like that going down. Let’s take it a step further…
The Mole Committee could be DC5 on the flip side. Just think about that! I can see the Mole as a team of at least five people because 5 is like a magic number in the Scandal world.
FIVE is the Magic Scandal Number - There’s 5 in OPA - Olivia, Huck, Harrison, Abby, and Quinn! There’s 5 for Fitz’s Oval Office - Olivia, Mellie, Cyrus, Fitz, Sally. There’s 5 for David’s Defiance investigation case - David, Alissa, James, Abby, and Olivia. There’s 5 in Defiance - Hollis, Cyrus, Mellie, Olivia and Verna. Yet again I must point out how Olivia’s always at the focal point of each group of five. There’s 5 in Operation I Want Answers, I Need My Best Friend Fitz Back - Cyrus, Charlie, James, Olivia and Fitz. When things get rough in all groups, Olivia’s the one that fixes it.
So far there’s two people in the mole story arc - Jake and mystery man Joe Morton.
Who are the other 3 folks we have yet to know is involved in the Mole deception? I think Joe and Jake are working for someone much bigger than them.
The Mole Committee: I wonder who is their Olivia Pope. I wonder who is their Cyrus. I wonder who is their Hollis. I also wonder who is their Verna. Could the Mole top DC5? Maybe…or maybe not.
Clearly Jake is their cleanup guy who enjoys playing Olivia AND Fitz for the Mole Committee’s agenda! Also does the mole committee know about him falling for Olivia?
I didn’t want to think that Joe Morton could be Olivia’s dad just because he’s black and she’s black but hey now it’s possible and that will be too damn predictable. I don’t think so.
Also could the mole committee be tied to Albatross, Iran, the hostage crisis, Thorngate, AND especially Defiance?!!!
This is all going to be revealed in the upcoming FIVE episodes. LAWD HAVE MERCY! I’m ready for what Shonda and the writers have in mind, seriously!

OMG, Gladiators! After what looked like slam-dunk evidence, it seems that Osbourne wasn’t the mole after all. But if the late Director of the CIA wasn’t the mole, who could it be? Here are some suspects.Captain Jake Ballard
We already know there’s something off about this guy. He’s spying on Olivia for Fitz, but then he’s lying about their relationship when he briefs the President. He definitely knows something about the mole after his meeting with a mysterious stranger immediately after Osbourne’s death—which he may have even been involved in. Could this charming and mysterious new man in Olivia’s life be a double agent?Mystery Man
We don’t know much about this guy, other than that he met with Jake immediately after Osbourne’s apparent suicide and seemed to know that the late CIA Director was not the mole. He also seemed pleased that the mole’s identity was still secret.Cyrus Beene
Cyrus is a true believer when it comes to President Grant, but that doesn’t mean he’s not willing to get his hands dirty if that’s what it takes. Perhaps he’s involved and has a plan that will get him back in Fitz’s good graces or he’s somehow putting “the good of the country” above morality once again. Let’s not forget, Cyrus almost had a hitman kill his own husband to protect his secrets.Mellie Grant
If there’s one thing you don’t want to do, it’s underestimate the First Lady. While she’s surely not in a lot of briefings that the mole would need access to, it’s also possible that she’s able to look at documents when Fitz isn’t watching or has her own loyal staff to spy for her. After all, what better cover is there than the loving, concerned wife. But what would be her motive?Hollis Doyle
There’s no love lost between Hollis and the White House, but like it or not they’ve been intertwined since Fitz’s campaign. That said, Hollis has been known to back a different player—such as Vice President Langston—when it suits him. He certainly is given a lot of access at the White House and his big bank account could buy him a lot of secrets.Vice President Sally Langston
Speaking of the Vice President, Sally Langston sure seemed comfortable taking charge after the assassination attempt on Fitz. While she later admitted the job was maybe more than she wanted when Fitz returned, that could have easily been placating the President with some nice words while she worked behind the scene to undermine him. Regardless, it’s clear that the VP has her own agenda, and isn’t afraid to play hardball.So, which of our prime suspects could it be? Or have we even MET the mole yet?
